Cardiologist Hit With Additional Sexual Assault Charges

In February, Michael Stephen Connelly, a cardiologist, was charged with one count of sexual assault after a former patient said Connelly had inappropriately touched her without her consent. The alleged incident happened in December 2012.

Now, law enforcement in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where he practiced, has charged Connelly with four additional counts of sexual assault after four additional victims came forward to report similar experiences.

“Everyone should feel safe when seeking medical care,” Staff Sergeant Michelle Doyle, from the Calgary Police Service Sexual Assault Investigative Unit, said in a statement dated May 5.

“It is especially egregious when members of our community are victimized by an individual in a position of trust,” Doyle added.

In a statement issued in February after the first sexual assault charge was handed down, the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Alberta (CPSA) said Connelly had “voluntarily withdrawn from active practice at this time.

“CPSA will conduct our own investigation into the matter,” the organization noted in its statement.

According to Calgary police, Connelly is next scheduled to appear in court on May 20.
