Do You Ask Your Patients About Recreational Cannabis Use?
The legalization by many states of the use of cannabis has helped destigmatize its use for recreational purposes. A 2020 Gallup Poll showed that almost 50 million people older than age 12 in the United States admitted to using cannabis in the past 12 months.
Many cannabis users do not consider it a “real drug” and therefore may not tell their physicians that they use the substance. In addition, some who report using cannabis as a substitute for prescription medications may be doing so without the knowledge of their healthcare providers.
