It’s important to register for a GP when your first arrive in Britain so you can get access to our healthcare services.

When you register, you should have been given an NHS. Normally, people are assigned this unique number or at birth or at the first point they access NHS care treatment.

An NHS number is a 10-digit number, like 485 777 3456.

This number helps your healthcare providers match you and your health records, though you don’t need an NHS number to access free services.

You can find your NHS number in most documents or letters sent to you by the NHS, such as your:

prescriptions
test results
hospital referral letters
appointment letters

Or you can find your NHS number on the NHS App (you’ll need to register if you have not used it before) or by using the Find your NHS number service.

You can also call your GP surgery and ask them for your NHS number.

You may need to prove your identity over the phone or visit your GP surgery with proof of identity.
