They include stopping smoking, being active, eating better, losing weight and maintaining normal blood pressure. The final two are controlling cholesterol and reducing blood sugar.
Dubbed “Life’s Simple Seven”, they also protect against heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
Prof Myriam Fornage, of Texas University, said: “Our study confirmed modifying lifestyle risk factors can offset a genetic risk of stroke.”
