There’s Only One Exercise That Macklemore Actually Enjoys
In 2012, rapper and songwriter Macklemore had the entire country singing along to his hit songs “Can’t Hold Us” and “Thrift Shop.” A lot has changed since then…but one thing that’s remained constant is the 37-year-old’s drive to stay fit. For the latest installment of Gym & Fridge, Men’s Health took a trip to Macklemore’s Los Angeles home to find out how he fuels his body and mind right.
For the Grammy Award-winning rapper, maintaining a healthy diet’s a challenge. An even harder challenge: vegetables. “If I’m being honest, a lot of people eat greens consistently, I’m not that dude,” he said. “I prefer a smoothie with some greens in it. My version of healthy looks like smoothies, acai bowls, water, vitamins, stretching. It’s a holistic thing. No fast foods. No sodas. There’s something about eating clean, eating pure…It just gives you that extra boost.”
But getting his diet to where it is now remains a work in progress; the rapper still has a soft spot for fast food via McDonald’s Dollar Menu. “I don’t like to do it very often,” he said. “We’re trying to protect the temple, watch out for the moneymaker.”
When he’s not busy touring, he tries to squeeze in a good workout every day, usually some push-ups and abs.
His favorite workout, though, you might not expect: golf. “[I] just love the challenge, the mental exercise that it is, the spiritual exercise, the patience, the acceptance, the process of playing the game,” he said. The rapper even has his own golf clothing line, Bogey Boys.
The one place you probably won’t find the rapper? The squat rack. “Anytime it’s leg time, I’m like, please god no.”
We hear you on that, Macklemore.
