Visceral fat, also known as belly fat, hides between vital organs, such as the liver, pancreas and intestines. This tricky location means that if this fat builds up, it can lead to serious health implications, varying from heart disease to diabetes. Food is one of the key contributors to this hidden fat but the good news is that it can also be an antidote.
It can be difficult to spot visceral fat as it’s often hidden in the abdominal cavity.
However, protruding belly, large-waist or apple-shaped figure could be signs.
This type of fat is more common in men but due to its harmful effects, it can be just as dangerous for everyone.
If your go-to breakfast is eggs, you’ll be happy to know that these little foods are able to reduce visceral fat.
The reason why eggs can be a good choice to shed the belly fat is their protein content.
And protein is the building block of a weight-loss diet.
The reason why it can help with weight loss is because the body breaks it down slowly.
Opting for protein-high foods will make you feel full for longer by fighting off hunger and increasing fullness hormones and cholecystokinin, according to the National Library of Medicine.
Cholecystokinin is a gut hormone released after having food which helps digestion and reduces your appetite.
Protein can also help lower the hunger hormone called ghrelin.
Feeling full for longer can help you take control of your calorie intake and consequently help you lose belly fat, the Harvard Health T.H. Chan School of Public Health reports.
Protein can also boost your metabolism, which can in return result in visceral fat loss, the National Library of Medicine adds.
Other studies have also found that people who followed high-protein diets had less visceral fat.
Larger-scale research of more than 20,00 adults discovered that a higher protein intake is associated with a lower body mass index and a smaller waist circumference as well.
More evidence found that when participants swapped carbs for a lower glycaemic choice such as protein, they were able to lose the harmful fat.
And all of these weight-loss benefits are packed in an egg.
However, the average egg contains only around six to seven grams of protein.
And the average sedentary person needs between 46 to 56 grams of protein per day.
So, implementing eggs in your visceral fat loss regime could help reduce the belly fat.
To add to your protein intake, you can also opt for non-fat Greek yoghurt as the evidence suggests that this food can also help to shed visceral fat.
