Dr Rupy Aujila is a medical professional and nutritional expert, founder of the Doctor’s Kitchen. He has appeared on This Morning and discusses healthy eating.

He spoke with Express.co.uk about vitamin D.

“The Government recommendation is for people to supplement during the winter months,” he said. “I mostly agree with that.

“Certainly if you have a darker complexion like myself you know you’d probably want to supplement all year round.

“There are a few experts who disagree with the advice, but I think it’s pretty innocuous.

“You might as well take a supplement because there is a plausible mechanism by which that can improve mood.”

Supplements can boost health when the diet is not enough. Another nutritionist, Rosie Miller, told Express.co.uk the best vitamins and supplements to take during autumn and winter. 

Dr Rupy explained vitamin D is not just a vitamin, it’s also a beneficial hormone.

“It is actually a hormone, and it has a multitude of different effects.

“It is responsible for a suite of different things like the immune system function, mood, obviously, metabolism.

“It’s really it’s really interesting. Taking vitamin D is a pragmatic decision.”

Dr Rupy also discussed the healthy food that causes bloating.

What foods include vitamin D?

Dr Rupy advised “things like eggs, oily fish, mackerel, sardines.

“You can get it in offal as well. You can also get it in vitamin D enriched mushrooms.

“But it’s difficult to get in meaningful amounts, so you do need to supplement.”

What does vitamin D do?

Vitamin D is produced when the body is exposed to sunlight and also can be found in some foods like fish, liver, and egg yolk.

It is beneficial to bones, helping the body process calcium.

Low amounts of the vitamin in the blood have been linked to cardiovascular disease and even cancer.

What are the symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency?

Symptoms can be subtle for adults, but include:

  • Changes in mood
  • Weakness in the muscles, aching and cramping
  • Fatigue
  • Bone paid
