Watch a Doctor React to Eddie Halls Rare Detached Bicep

Strongman-turned-boxer Eddie Hall has revealed that his upcoming grudge match against Hafthor Borjnsson has been unavoidably delayed, after he suffered a detached bicep in his left arm during a recent sparring session. In a video on his YouTube channel, the former World’s Strongest Man shared some footage of the injury as it occurred, as well as footage of the surgery which was rapidly arranged to repair the damage.

YouTuber and sports medicine expert Dr. Brian Sutterer, who creates content giving an audience-friendly medical perspective on athletes’ injuries, just reviewed the footage of Hall’s injury, which took place almost immediately when he threw a left hook, and offers his opinion about what exactly happened on his own channel.

“This is unusual because ruptures of the biceps typically occur higher up in the shoulder, and this is an unusual position which you wouldn’t think would cause that much force on his biceps tendon,” he says. However, he then points out that Hall’s arm is swinging in to make contact with the side of his sparring partner’s body. “He’s putting an eccentric load on his biceps,” he continues. “As he’s coming in his bicep is a little bit clinched, and then as he makes contact, it’s going to want to stretch and straighten out that elbow, which is going to induce this eccentric load.”

Sutterer compares Hall’s injury to that of a deadlifter (Hall’s former profession) in that it places an eccentric load on the muscle. In other words, the muscle tries to contract while it is also lengthening.

“Anabolic steroid use is something we see as a risk factor for these, but that’s also because of the population that generally tear their distal biceps tendon,” Sutterer explains. “You can also just have general wear and tear of that tendon that weakens it over time as you subject it to more and more load.”
