A record 35 million people in England are eligible for a free influenza vaccine this year following fears of a bad winter fuelled by waning immunity.

There were 972 deaths linked to the virus in the week to October 1, down 12.4 percent on the previous seven days.

Coronavirus accounted for around one in 13 of the total number of 12,132 deaths.

Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at The Open University, said that while there were “certainly reasons for optimism”, the numbers were “quite high”, noting that it was “still almost 140 a day”.
