Combined, all of these properties make avocado an ideal snack for hypertension patients, according to nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.
If you’re not a massive fan of avocado, you could still reap the benefits by swapping your cooking oil for avocado oil.

“Researchers have previously found that eating avocado regularly can lower cholesterol levels due to the plant sterols, soluble fibre and antioxidants they provide,” she wrote for her website, MyLowerBloodPressure.com.
“It now seems that eating avocado may help to lower blood pressure, too.
“Avocados are low in sodium salts and provide potassium, calcium, magnesium and vitamin E, all of which have beneficial effects on blood pressure control.
“Avocado is also a rich source of healthy oils, with as much as 30 percent of avocado pulp consisting of the same monounsaturated fats as are found in olive oil.”
But if you’re looking for a sweeter addition to your hypertension diet, look no further than bananas.
Bananas are a great source of potassium, which helps to balance out the negative effects of sodium.
The nutrient works by regulating the amount of fluids in the body.
If there’s too much water in the body, the extra fluid in the blood puts extra pressure on the blood vessel walls.
Eating a healthy, balanced diet is one of the best ways to manage your blood pressure at home.
Aim to eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day.
If you’re worried about your blood pressure, you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist.
Left untreated, hypertension raises the risk of a deadly heart attack or stroke.
