Cancer breakthrough: Groundbreaking research finds new treatment to stop cancer growth

Cancer could be combated with berzosertib a study has found. The new drug targets a cancer cell’s ability to repair its DNA, halting tumour growth. The study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology assessed the safety of the medicine.

As part of the study, researchers found cancer stopped growing in half of patients given berzosertib, which belongs to a new class of drugs known as ATR inhibitors.

ATR inhibitors block the function of a protein called ATR, which helps cancer cells fix damaged DNA.

In two of the patients taking berzosertib, cancer was found to completely disappear.

The researchers noted it’s unusual to see a clinical response in such early stages of a drug trial.
