Initially only patients in hospital with suspected coronavirus were eligible for testing. But in recent weeks the NHS has been ramping up its capacity for COVID-19 testing. It was announced last week essential workers who needed a test could apply online on the Government website.
At today’s coronavirus daily briefing (April 28), Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced more people will now be able to be tested for coronavirus symptoms.
Testing will be expanded to all care home residents and staff, regardless of whether they have COVID-19 symptoms.
It will also be extended to all those aged 65 and over with symptoms and their households.
Those who have to leave their home for work who have symptoms will also be able to be tested.

How to get a coronavirus test
Further details on how to apply for a test if you are over 65 are expected to be revealed in due course.
Currently key workers are able to apply on the Goverment website for a coronavirus test.
Key workers who are self-isolating are able to refer themselves for a COVID-19 test.
The Government has set up many drive-through testing sites across the UK which key workers can book an appointment for.
There is also the option of a home test kit.
This option is currently limited, but the Government has pledged to make more available.
Employers can also refer an employee for a COVID-19 test.
Using the Government portal, an employer can upload a full list of names and contact details of employees who require tests.
