Here's How To Make TikTok's Extra Crispy Smashed Potatoes

If there’s one food I would take the time to write a love letter to, it would be potatoes. You can eat them mashed, fried, scalloped, boiled and baked – and every single way tastes delicious. I mean, what other veggies are so versatile?

What’s more, in one Journal of the American College of Nutrition study researchers found that when people followed healthy recipes, they actually lost weight eating five to seven servings of spuds per week. That’s a lot of potatoes, people.

Oh, and then there’s the researchers from McMaster University who found that potatoes – or starchy vegetables – can help women maintain muscle.

Reason being? It’s a source of high-quality, plant-derived protein.

So when we heard a new TikTok recipe – in the form of crispy, salty potato disks – was doing the rounds, we had to investigate.

The mouth-watering original, shared by TikToker @meatlikemike has garnered over 34 million views. The US man is shown boiling a bunch of small potatoes and covering them in a collection of flavouring. Before chucking them in the oven, he squishes each with a cup, which he explains results in “a soft interior, crispy exterior and the best roast potatoes you’ve ever had.”

As with all of TikTok’s viral recipes, there have been a number of variations born from the original, many of which use different techniques and flavour combinations.

TikTok user @mxriym, for example, crafted their own recipe in which the boiled potatoes are dunked directly into a cup of well-seasoned oil and then re-dipped individually in the oil after being smashed.

Another TikTok user, @tay_richard, boils her potatoes with 1/2 teaspoon baking soda for an even crispier result.
