When Anthony Bayer was a teenager, he would eat upwards of 10,000 calories every day, and at his heaviest, weighed 330 pounds.
“My weight and size were getting bigger and bigger,” he says in a new episode of the transformation series Brand New Me. “Food was an addiction, because every time I was stressed out, I would just eat and eat, and that’s how the weight would pack on. Anthony’s wake-up call came, he recalls, when a health scare led to a doctor informing him that he was in danger of becoming seriously ill and limiting his options in life if he didn’t make a change.
“I woke up one night, and I was having heart palpitations,” he says. “I end up getting rushed to hospital, the doctor pretty much just explains to me I had an irregular heartbeat at the time because I was obviously putting so much pressure on my body and I was on the verge of falling into Type 2 diabetes… I got home that night, I looked in front of the mirror for the first time in years, and something just changed inside of me, and I was like, you know what, I need to make a difference. And that was the turning point to the transformation of my life.”
Anthony began researching how to transition to a more nutritious diet, took up walking, and eventually started going to the gym, committing to exercising every single day. Now aged 27, he has lost a total amount of 115 pounds, and currently weighs in at 215 pounds.
“My transformation has changed me mentally,” he says, explaining that he feels so much more confident, which has in turn enabled him to enjoy dating—but his motivation remains self-driven. “You can’t do it for anybody else, because if you’re doing it for other people, you’re not going to go anywhere. You need to do it for yourself, and if you can do it for yourself, I promise you, you can change your life.”
